I created an assemblage titled Heaven Bound and it was inspired by Paul Laurence Dunbar's poem, Sympathy—specifically the last stanza. My initial intent was to merely “respond” to the poem by creating a 3-dimensional piece of art; however, the creation of the assemblage also led me to compose this poem. To see the assemblage, please go here.
Bound within flesh, metal, wood, and blood,
my heart beats to give me existence.
Oppressed by the stain of this thing called life,
my spirit reaches heaven, bound in song.
I am a visual artist who writes poetry and vignettes.
